Hello and welcome to humblestuff.
My name is Marie, and I am delighted to tell you a little bit about humblestuff cleaning products and the story behind their development.
I have been a self employed domestic cleaner for over ten years, and as you may imagine, have used many different cleaning products over the years. In 2013, I decided that I didn’t want to use the toxic oven cleaning products to clean my oven at home. But what was the alternative?
I decided to do some research into non toxic cleaning products. I did not expect to find that bicarbonate of soda and vinegar could be used to clean your house from top to bottom. I tried to buy these ingredients at my local supermarket, but realised that they did not stock white vinegar or big enough tubs of bicarbonate of soda. Thankfully, I found what I needed online.
My first attempt at cleaning the oven with the bicarbonate of soda wasn’t too bad. Inspired, I continued spending hours each night researching how to make your own cleaning products at home. Thankfully, my cleaning clients fully supported the idea of non toxic cleaning, which allowed me to experiment and further develop the products. After a lot of trial and error, I finally settled on the recipes that I knew worked best. I decided to add pure essential oils to the products, not only for the beautiful natural aroma, but also to enhance the cleaning power of the products with their beneficial properties.
When asked by one of my clients if I could make a product for them to use, I was surprised. I had never considered making products for anyone other than myself. This got me thinking again…
I chatted with my husband Andrew, who thought it was a brilliant idea to make products. I then contacted my local Trading Standards office, and after a few meetings, helped me to understand all of the requirements to become a producer of cleaning products. It was quite a lot to take in. However, with all the support from family, friends and clients, humblestuff handmade cleaning products was created.
We have been selling our products at a variety of craft and artisan fairs, and this is a great way to meet people and find out what is important to them. For some it is the fact that we make each product fresh and recommend a use by date. For others it is the fact that we do not add any harsh chemical preservatives or artificial fragrances.
When people ask me what I think is important, I just say that they need to be able to clean. I only ever wanted to show that it was possible to clean with simple ingredients, the fact that the products are appealing for other reasons too is a genuine bonus.
We are delighted to have been included in The Vegan Kind April 2016 (TVK30). A big thank you to Theo Paphitis for awarding us the coveted #SBS award (Small Business Sunday).
